Traveling Emmy Award
Boyd Huppert, Kare11 Land of 1000 Lakes, won two Emmy awards for his coverage of Tyler during the car restoration and the First Annual Tyler Shipman Memorial Car Show. Boyd, his camera crew, news station and all involved are a prime example the use of media as a positive tool to influence change. He won an Emmy for both his original story on our family and won another Emmy for the story he did after Tyler passed away when we held the First Annual Tyler Shipman Memorial Car Show.
Boyd came to visit us at the first annual car show with two boxes. They contained the Emmys he won. He presented them tearfully to our family who had lost so much and said that while he had won them, the story was ours and he wanted our family to have them. Who has Emmys in their house? We do. We used to have two until 2017. That year, I started a new #PayItForwardForTyler journey and passed along Erma the Emmy as a way to inspire youth to get involved in their communities and to encourage their peers to do the same.
It has been with wonder and a grateful heart to see the journey Erma has taken. Erma is meant to inspire the holder to know that dreams are only limited by the walls you put around them. My hope is that it will make them smile and maybe even laugh – because it’s original owner – me – is 1 part serious and 3 parts goofball. It is a reminder of family, community and giving to others. These are the things that connect us all and ultimately this is what matters and not the shiny hardware.
Each year the keeper of Erma selects the next recipient. .....And what great things these young people have done. It is truly an honor to know each one of them.
